Weekend research talk: Khare on the work of Newton and Thorne
I'm in the process of preparing next week's Chapter 2, on the Langlands program and the landscape of different kinds of L-functions.
Most research talks on the Langlands program are incomprehensible unless you already have huge amounts of technical background. But I have found one short talk that is quite accessible, especially if you have already watched the RH Saga Episode 5 (Operations on L-functions). In this short talk (only 23 minutes), Chandrashekhar Khare describes one of the main advances in recent years in the Langlands program over number fields (i.e. the original and most difficult branch of the Langlands program). It is the perfect warmup for next week!

The talk was given at the Clay Research Conference 2024. At the conference webpage, you will also find other interesting talks, like the ones by Philippe Michel and by Ana Caraiani.
